What is Calcific Tendinitis?

Calcific Tendinitis is a condition in which calcium deposits form within the rotator cuff tendons, most commonly the supraspinatus tendon. These deposits can cause inflammation, pain and restriction of shoulder movement.

Although many calcium deposits remain painless, some can lead to severe shoulder pain and significantly affect daily activities and sleep.

Who Gets Calcific Tendinitis?

Calcific Tendinitis commonly affects:

  • Adults between 35 and 65 years of age
  • Women more frequently than men
  • Patients with diabetes or thyroid disorders
  • Individuals involved in repetitive overhead activities

What are the Common Symptoms of Calcific Tendinitis?

Patients may experience:

  • Pain on lifting the arm overhead
  • Night pain and disturbed sleep
  • Shoulder stiffness
  • Pain while reaching or lifting
  • Sudden episodes of severe shoulder pain

Some patients experience extremely severe pain during the phase when the body starts dissolving the calcium deposit.

How is Calcific Tendinitis Diagnosed?

Diagnosis is based on:

  • Clinical examination
  • Shoulder X-rays
  • Ultrasound scan
  • MRI scan when required

These investigations help determine the size, location and nature of the calcium deposits and identify any associated rotator cuff problems.

What are the Non-Surgical Treatments for Calcific Tendinitis?

Most patients improve without surgery using:

  • Rest and activity modification
  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • Ice application
  • Physiotherapy
  • Ultrasound-guided steroid injections when required

Non-operative treatment is successful in the majority of patients.

When is Surgery Needed?

Surgery may be recommended if:

  • Symptoms persist despite treatment
  • Pain repeatedly returns
  • Large calcium deposits are present
  • Shoulder function remains significantly affected

What is the Arthroscopic Treatment for Calcific Tendinitis?

Dr. Anand Jadhav performs Arthroscopic (Keyhole) Removal of Calcium Deposits using minimally invasive techniques.

During surgery:

  • Calcium deposits are removed
  • Inflamed tissues are treated
  • Any associated impingement or rotator cuff problems are addressed

This procedure typically provides excellent pain relief and improved shoulder function.

How is the Recovery after Surgery?

Typical recovery includes:

  • Sling support for a few days
  • Early shoulder exercises
  • Physiotherapy for 6–12 weeks
  • Return to office work in 1–2 weeks
  • Return to sports and heavy activities in 6–12 weeks

Most patients achieve excellent pain relief and regain good shoulder function.
