Exercise Charts — Guided Rehabilitation
Structured, phase-wise exercises are the key to a smooth recovery after joint replacement or arthroscopic surgery. The charts below provide general guidance for common procedures.
Post Hip Replacement Exercises
- Hip Precautions (6 Weeks) — Do not bend the hip beyond 90°, cross legs, or turn feet inward. Use a raised toilet seat and raised chair.
- Ankle Pumps + Quad Sets (Day 1) — Pump ankles hourly and tighten thigh muscles regularly throughout the day.
- Gluteal Squeezes (Day 2) — Squeeze buttock muscles, hold 5 seconds. 10 reps, 3 times daily.
- Hip Abduction (Week 2) — Slide the operated leg outward keeping toes up. Return to centre. 10 reps, twice daily.
- Standing Hip Exercises (Week 3–4) — Hip flexion, abduction and extension in small controlled movements, increasing range weekly.
Shoulder Rehabilitation Guide
- Phase 1 (Weeks 0–4): Arm in sling. Pendulum exercises only, plus wrist and elbow movement.
- Phase 2 (Weeks 4–8): Sling weaned off. Passive then active-assisted shoulder movements.
- Phase 3 (Weeks 8–12): Strengthening begins — rotator cuff and scapular stabilisation.
- Phase 4 (Months 3–6): Progressive resistance and sport-specific functional training.
